Reading Greek on the world wide web

Z Ancient Greek texts online in both Greek and English, with grammatical parsing of all words, links to the

full Liddell & Scott (LSJ) lexicon, and scholarly commentaries!  Here’s how to read Greek on the WWW, using Perseus.

I A.  www.perseus.tufts.edu

       B.    Choose “Classics” (under ”Perseus Contents” in the upper left corner)

This gives you the page “Greek and Roman Materials”

Go down the page for a myriad of texts & commentaries; but first set it up for Greek à

       C.    Click on “Configure Display” (in the shaded bar running across the top of the page)

*The most important thing here is telling it to display the Greek texts in Greek font.

Other settings (below) are optional, e.g. they ask how much info. you want to see.

You have to get the Greek font yourself using their instructions:

                        Set:      Word Study Links:  Yes

Greek Dispay:  – **see font help page for downloading font** -- get one, choose one -- e.g.

SGreek for Windows (but Sgreek now costs $20) or SPIonic (which is free)

Default language:           original language [i.e. Greek]

Lookup Tool Links:      choose either “current collection” [i.e. Classical] or “all”

Cross References:         Choose a bunch of these and at least the first two

Lemma:                        “Italicize whole lemma and place mark”

à When finished with choices, hit “Set configuration”

(note I’m –  ego ge – getting an error message at this point – this just means it is not going

on to the next page properly – it does keep my changes, so it worked.  Just use back arrow

on your WWW browser to return to the Texts page [as in part B. above])

            D.      Texts ... go down list and choose your text in its full Greek glory.

Each word is a link!  Click each word for (i) its form & grammar and (ii) meaning

Go over to the full Lexicon (Liddell & Scott) for better definitions.

            E.       Notice that below the list of primary “Texts”, Perseus lists “Secondary Sources”.  Here you

can find Greek grammars as well as a treasure of valuable commentaries.  But they are not

arranged well as they are not arranged by, or even lined to, the ancient texts – you’ll be able

to find that on my home page, “Reading Classical Authors on the WWW” (being updated

                        now):    www.users.drew.edu/~jlenz
