Andrew W.Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

The Mellon Fellowships are designed to help exceptionally promising students prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic disciplines.The Mellon Fellowship is a competitive merit award for first-year doctoral students. Fellows may take their award to any accredited graduate program in the United States or Canada. For the year 2001, 85 Fellowships will be awarded. The Fellowship covers graduate tuition and required fees for the first academic year and includes a stipend of $15,000. More than 1,700 Fellows have been named since the competition began in 1982. Mellon Fellows now holding the Ph.D. are teachers and scholars at some of the nation’s top colleges and universities.

A request for application material is necessary by December 7, 2000. All materials must be received by December 19, 2000. Students are required to use the electronic application unless it is absolutely impossible to do so. Recommendations can also be submitted electronically. In addition to the usual 1,000 word statement of interest, students must submit a five- to seven-page academic writing sample. Complete information about eligibility, the application process, the required GRE exams, etc. is available on the web page. Also check there for due dates including the date by which the GREs must be taken. Brochures will be available in the Honors office when they are sent by the foundation, but there is more information on line.
