Drew Newsgroups

This page is not an official publication of Drew University, is not endorsed by my employer, Drew University, and has nothing to do with my department, Academic Technology. This is just a document I am posting for informational purposes, and to play around with Dreamweaver. So sue me.

Du.aramark. Still listed as du.daka until some time after Daka's departure, this forum was once a hotbed of culinary discussion. Requests for spinach salad, complaints about bad bagels, and occasional Aramark responses graced this forum.
Du.chatter. A generic forum for open discussion on any topic. Not really ever used, even back when newsgroups were used.
Du.4-4. Drew used to go by a 5-3 system, where students took five classes per semester, at three credits a class. Drew switched to its present 4-4 system, four classes per semester at four credits each. Since the switch took place, and all students who ever took classes under the 5-3 system that could discuss this topic are gone, I don't expect must life here ever.
Du.announcements. Back when newsgroups were used, various announcements were posted here. March on town hall, Aide Station now hiring, etc.
Du.alumni.announcements. This is a good idea. But under the current system, I find this newsgroup's very existence quite amusing. Alumni used to be able to keep their accounts on daniel.drew.edu, the old Campus Wide Information System (hereafter referred to as CWIS). Newsgroups were accessed through daniel's interface, so alumni could still read and post. Now, the only alumni who can read and post on newsgroups are people such as Tom McGill, or most of AcadTech's employees (in other words, alumni that work for Drew). So don't expect much out of ANY du.alumni group.
Du.alumni.chatter. Read above.
Du.alumni.questions.computers. Read above yet again.
Du.alumni.jobs. Read above one final time.
Du.advertisements. Loft for sale, TV for sale, roommate for sale. Popular at the end of a semester, when everyone looks around and realizes all the crap they have to pack.
Du.class 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001. Let's see, as of spring 2000 these four classes have newsgroups. Now, come this summer, three out of the four aren't going to be able to post (same reasons as above). And by then, three out of the four CLA classes won't have newsgroups. Since no one uses newsgroups, I guess this doesn't matter. Which really is a shame. I've seen some nice class-oriented discussions in these groups in the past.
Du.cla.*. The various .cla newsgroups cover the various classes and a couple organizations within the college of liberal arts. Some first year seminars used their newsgroups regularly in the past.
Du.commuters. Commuters at Drew, a tiny and abused minority, once banded together on here. Such popular movements as 'Adopt a Commuter' and 'Commuter Uprising 1997' were started in this newsgroup.
Du.compliments. Not a very popular newsgroup. Ever. It was often ignored and overlooked for another newsgroup, something indicative of Drew's very nature.
Du.computers. Discussion of computers. Other subgroups were more used.
Du.computers.announcements. Important announcements referring to computer-related events.
Du.computer.training. This newsgroup is pretty much the TRC's mouthpiece to the Drew community. Announcements of training classes, tips, etc. are posted here by Lorrie.
Du.forsale. Lofts for sale, lofts for sale, fifty bucks a loft.
Du.grad.org.aerobigod. A once active and proud newsgroup, this tight-knit bunch of grad students discussed various issues and activities in a delightful intellectual manner. When Daniel left, they disappeared as well. I wonder if they found some other form of online communication and collaboration.
Du.gradschool. Generic gradschool chatter.
Du.gripes. Gripe. Whine. By far the most active and popular newsgroup at Drew. Not an official forum by any means, but still a great place to bitch and moan and scream. "For 28K a year, I should get..." seem to be very popular words here. Plus the annual complaints about leaf blowers, food, the sun, just about anything. A couple years, two guys gave out du.gripes awards, I won one. I'm still proud of that fact. It was a posh awards ceremony, plenty of fun.
Du.koosh. A few incidents that occurred in the spring of 1998 (I think) spurred a series of events at Drew. The group 'Conscious Human Beings Against Police Brutality' was formed, the mayor of Madison spoke at The Other End, Drew students marched through Madison protesting police brutality, and a series of Welch Firsters wrote up an amusing flyer about forced acts with a beast of burden. One of the smaller events was a group discussion, where the person holding the koosh ball could speak, and all others would remain silent. A technique often used in icebreaker sessions or when washed up on a deserted island before Piggy dies, this newsgroup was a forum discussing racial issues.
Du.lan. Discussion of the Drew Local Area Network. Formed before the LAN was in every dorm, died soon after the LAN was in every dorm.
Du.lost_and_found. Found a ring with a light purple stone in Great Hall. Lost a black umbrella in the Commons Theater. Fairly obvious. I've used it a few times in the past, both ends of usage.
Du.mail_services. Basically du.gripes, take two. Even before Tri-State got here. Everyone's mail goes to WMNJ, staff mail in student boxes, and various other stories ended up here.
Du.music.general. As opposed to all the other du.music groups (sarcasm-o-meter test), this group is for generic music-related posts. Bands looking for members, CDs for sale crossposted here, etc. The coolest discussion was the standard 'stranded on a desert island, which 10 CDs would you want to have' one, which also showed up on another newsgroup a year or two later.
Du.newsgroups. Suggestions for new du newsgroups, and requests for other Usenet groups to be added.
Du.orchestra. Once an active group of friendly neighborly orchestra gossip.
Du.org.acorn. This group spent some time as a hotbed of controversy and debate, mostly crossposted between here and the SGA newsgroup. Continuous slamming of the SGA over the ways some funds were spent, continuous slamming of the Acorn for being a substandard newspaper. Cursing, swearing, insulting acronyms, this newsgroup had it all.
Du.org.apo. Alpha Phi Omega's discussion group.

Du.org.chorale. Chorale's little newsgroup.

Du.org.country. I don't know, I don't want to know, and I hope it has nothing to do with music.
Du.org.deal. Drew's Environmental Action League's forum. Various events like nature walks and cleanings were announced and planned here.
Du.org.duds. The drama society's newsgroup. For an active group meatside, the newsgroup hasn't seen any life in my memory.
Du.org.dust. Talk about Drew TV. About the only thing I've seen here has been compliments or insults of various shows.
Du.org.iso. A forum to discuss various radioactive isotopes, and their properties.
Du.org.medfest. One of the few remaining active newsgroups. Plotlines, events, in-character discussions, and the like fill this board. Medfesters are probably one of the few remaining techno-savvy groups on campus who still post to newsgroups these days.
Du.org.peacemakers. Another dead newsgroup for another Drew organization.

Du.org.pro_choice. Marches and demonstrations were posted here. This is one of the cases where the group itself died before the newsgroup, interestingly enough. This club's death is a typical Drew story, sadly enough.

Du.org.pub. Discussion group for one of the finer organizations on campus, The Pub. Being a former manager, I am not biased in any way. Boasts of darts skill and requests for specific beers were posted here.

Du.org.sage. Students Against GEnocide. As opposed to all those students for genocide, marching in the streets of Madison for genocide to continue unhindered.

Du.org.sga. After the SGA had a dinner at Poor Herbie's for a large sum of money, there were all sorts of allegations of who exactly was footing the bill, and how immoral that was. Big debate in this newsgroup, all sorts of name calling, tons of fun. All dead.
Du.org.sps. I have no clue. Really. Stop asking me already.
Du.org.the-home. This newsgroup was formed for the most recent theme house, the Spirituality House. Known as 'the home' (don't ask), announcement of house events were posted here.
Du.org.thespace. Once, on a campus long ago and not too far away, the drinking age of the state was 18 and the Pub was large. Professors would hold their office hours in said Pub. All was well and good. Then the drinking age got bumped up to 21, the Pub got cut in half, and both halves slowly died. Painfully. At first, the wall that separated the two was glass, so the youngun side was known as 'The Fishbowl' due to the large number of wide-eyed people pressed against the wall. Eventually it became nothing more then storage, and the Pub itself fell into obscurity and hard times. Finally, someone decided to open up a campus hangout in what was the nonalcoholic side of the Pub. Various incarnations passed, including 'This End', a mocking of The Other End, which is a foreshadowing of things to come in 1998 when the Space tried to pass itself off as a cool independent coffee place. This newsgroup has never seen as much action as the Space, however.
Du.org.upb. The University Planning Board is one of the most important clubs on campus, at least in direct school-sponsored social events. Concerts, dances, movies, trips, and other non-academic events are planned and executed by this organization with help from Student Activities. This newsgroup would have various upcoming events posted.
Du.org.wmnj. Another newsgroup to which I am highly biased, having been the general manager of WMNJ recently. WMNJ, 'The Voice of Drew University', is Drew's own student-run radio station. Ten watts of pure power. Discussions of FCC issues, cool shows, musical interests, and such occurred here. Including my favorite thread, the desert island CD list compilation.
Du.phones. Questions about the voicemail system, complaints about long distance billing, and assorted other related topics. Still used, actually.
Du.politics. Politics? At a small liberal arts college where political science is the most popular major? Never!
Du.questions. Random assorted questions that have no other place. If they were angrier, they'd be in du.gripes.
Du.questions.computer. Computer questions. Why doesn't my monitor work, how can I do this in WordPerfect, etc. Generally more in-depth questions then your standard Drew computer questions. Otherwise, the person would just call extension 3205 and get it taken care of quickly and painlessly.
Du.quotes. Sometimes people say funny things. When they do so, you can post said amusing lines out of context here for the university to ponder over in deep meditation. In years past, reading this newsgroup, you would believe that Medfesters and/or Academic Technology employees were the oddest people at Drew. Though for some time, Guy and Ed single-handedly dominated this newsgroup. It was the unofficial newsgroup of the Guy Pastena Posse. You just watch a movie with them, and sure enough the next day there was a post here about your hair ending up in someone's pants.
Du.quotes.d. After seeing your initials pop up followed by a quote you feel you need to justify, or seeing a quote you would like to comment on that didn't involve you, you would reply here. The .d, for those unfamiliar with Usenet style hierarchies, refers to discussion. Only quotes belong in du.quotes, the chatter about said quotes belongs in du.quotes.d.

Du.recycling. One of my favorite newsgroups ever. It seems that every year for ages, a group of freshmen (sorry, first year students) would take over a random newsgroup and use it as their personal hangout. For my freshman class, our newsgroup was du.recycling. Anything we wanted to chat about ended up here, usually discussion about Mr.Box's latest mishaps and adventures. March 1997 saw a 160 line post from James Winans, announcing the Ed and James Band (James Winans, Ed Dooley, and Guy Pastena) 1997 High School Auditoriums World Tour, with Sexually Pale (Nathan Lindsey and Robert Wannemacher). This tour was to promote their new single, High School Auditoriums.

Du.religion. If you've got a place to discuss politics, you know you need a place to debate religion. Too bad both are just as dead now.
Du.rides. Hi, I need a ride to Baltimore for Spring Break. Willing to split gas. You get the general drift. A very useful newsgroup.
Du.role-playing.storyboard. Whole intricate storyline, group effort. All sorts of unwritten rules, like 'Thou Shalt Not Force Another Poster's Character To Do Something' and such. Has died, since most of the people involved with it seem to have graduated. So no more public ongoing roleplaying.
Du.rumors. Luckily, I've never seen this newsgroup used. Knowing Drew, I can only imagine what it would be like if active. *shudder*
Du.scholars. I would assume a discussion group for Drew Scholars.

Du.sports. Well, we can debate about politics and religion. So we need to debate about sports as well. How 'bout them Yankees? What do you mean you're a Mets fan? Why, you little!

Du.sports.drew. Yet another group that I have not seen used once in my short time at Drew. An open forum for talking about Drew sports.
Du.tdd. The exact history of this newsgroup was relayed to me once back in 1996. My memory fails me. All that I remember is that there was a newsgroup for general discussion between Drew students and students at other universities. The newsgroup was dropped by the other universities, so Drew axed it as well. Then there was this outcry by the Drew regulars of said group, and du.tdd was formed to give them a place to talk. Du.tdd had its regulars which talked about various topic and their lives.
Du.technology.suggestions. Think some area of technology at Drew could be changed and/or improved? Here's your soapbox, fanboy.
Du.testing. Got a new seven-line .sig that you want to make sure lines up correctly? Got a new alias you want to see in print? Convinced that your posts aren't showing up and you want to test your newsgroup configuration? Here's the place for you. Plenty of posts with the subject line, "1 2 3".
Du.volunteer. Was actually a fairly active group. The student who worked at the volunteer center would post up various opportunities to give back to the community here. Walking old lady's dogs, helping out at soup kitchens, etc.

Du.wanted. If you downright needed something, and no du.wanted group was appropriate for it, you could post your secret desire here in hopes that it would be answered.

Du.wanted.roomates. Housing lottery came in. You were a few people ahead of the class below you. But you really need to live in a decent dorm. Pick up some random stranger to spend the next two semesters with here.
Du.wanted.usedbooks. Looking to pick up some books for a class cheaper then what the book store or some other online vendor sells them for? Post here, maybe someone will have them lying around. Maybe that person is really desperate for cash. Then the two of you can do lunch.
