Multicultural Awareness Week this semester is October 1-5, and the topic is "The Future of Multiculturalism: Drew and Beyond." We are invited to consider a number of different aspects of this topic including how "mixed race" people classify themselves, the impact of biological research on the concept "race," the role of ethnic pride as both a positive and a negative force (from identity to geniocide), the concept of "diversity," and life on Drew's campus. Write an assignment inviting students to respond to soem aspect of this issue in a way that relates to your seminar. This assignment could invite your students to draw on the topic of your seminar or a specific assigned reading. It could also invite them to draw on oral, written, technological, or library skills taught in the seminar (or in relation to it).
Before you write the actual assignment, consider the following:
i) Your pedagogical goals: What would you like to achieve
with this assignment?
ii) The relationship between this assignment and your seminar:
What skills/course material/specific topics of your seminar do you expect
the students to utilize in this assignment?
iii) Your expectations: What kinds of writing would appropriate
in response to this assignment?
