Multicultural Awareness Week this semester is October 1-5, and the topic is "The Future of Multiculturalism: Drew and Beyond." We are invited to consider a number of different aspects of this topic including how "mixed race" people classify themselves, the impact of biological research on the concept "race," the role of ethnic pride as both a positive and a negative force (from identity to genocide), the concept of "diversity," and life on Drew's campus. Classes will not be canceled for this week, but events will be planned for lunchtime, late afternoon, and evening every day (including a talk by the author of this year's common reading--The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down--Anne Fadiman). Faculty are encouraged to include at least one event from the week in their courses in some way and to attend events along with their students. |
