1.
How would you define science?
“I don’t know how I can
define it. I suppose science is the study of how things evolved;
science is a mixture of technology and the human mind, maybe the makeup
of things in the universe.”
How would you define
art?
“Art is expressing one’s
feelings, desires and emotions through painting, dancing, music, whatever.
It’s a way of expressing one’s ideas, even if no one else can determine
what they are.”
Summary
of all answers to question 1
2. What drew you
towards art?
“I really don’t know. Everyone
used to tell my mom, ‘Was you daughter born with a crayon in her hand?’
I guess it’s always just been a part of me. I am actually self-taught,
not really having formal art lessons up until my senior year of high school.”
Why do you think scientists
are drawn to their field?
“I think scientists are
curious. Some may be in it for the prestige. Overall, though,
I think it is curiosity that drives them.”
Summary
of all answers to question 2
3. What do you aim
to accomplish in art?
“I want to hone my skills,
to be able to express my emotions in any way possible and one day become
a professor and teach others how to express themselves.”
What do you think scientists
aim to accomplish?
“Scientists aim to help
out humankind by applying their knowledge to complex problems.”
Summary
of all answers to question 3
4. Do you think
what you do is creative? If so, how? If not,
why?
“Yes, I do believe what
I do is creative, because no one else in the world is like me. I
am my very own individual and it would be very hard for someone to copy
my own inner thoughts and feelings.”
Do you think science
is creative? If so, how? If not, why?
“I don’t think so because
experiments can be done and can yield the same results- there are only
so many things an individual can do- in art things can be similar
or copied- but not the spirit of the individual.”
Summary
of all answers to question 4
5. To what degree
do emotions play a role in your work if at all?
“Emotions play a huge part
in my work. Would an artist still be an artist if they had no emotions?
It would be hard for them to call themselves that- all artwork, painting,
writing, etc, tries to depict something, and attempts to make the observer
feel the emotions as well.”
To what degree do you
think emotions play a role in science?
“I really can’t say- I don’t
know. I’m not really into the science thing, but maybe a scientist’s
emotions drive them to do their work.”
Summary
of all answers to question 5
6. What is beauty?
“Beauty can’t be defined;
it’s different with everyone. Everyone has their own concept of beauty.
A favorite quote of mine is ‘The best an most beautiful things in this
world can neither be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.’
–Helen Keller, which I believe sums up how I feel on this subject”
Do you find beauty in
art?
“I personally find beauty
in art. The colors and expression allow you to find beauty in even
‘the ugliest’ work of art.”
Do you find beauty in
science?
“I find some things is science
beautiful, such as aurora borealis or watching the development of a fetus.”
Summary
of all answers to question 6
7. Do you think
art and science are related? If so, how? If not, why?
“No, I don’t think there
are any connections. I believe both are separate entities and each
is unique in a different way.”
Summary
of all answers to question 7
8. Which do you
think plays a greater role: science in art or art in science?
“Science in art because
there is a science to mixing colors, making up dance moves, writing a short
story, etc.”
Summary
of all answers to question 8
9. When you are
observing nature, what thoughts come to mind?
“Just how beautiful nature
is. I want to depict nature through my artwork in the way I perceive
it, and see how people react to my depiction.”
Summary
of all answers to question 9
10. What do you
consider success in your field?
“A new way to paint, to
draw something no one has before- or a different way to view something.
For instance, drawing what a person would look like from the inside- I
have yet to see something like that!”
