Beckett - simply Beckett

[Beckett] Feb. 9, 1990-June 25, 2002

Beckett is an ex-racer, who came to live at Magi unexpectedly in March of 1993. He was among the dogs abandoned in a racing kennel at the end of the racing season in 1992. After he was rescued, he was nursed back to health and fostered by the woman in charge of the rescue group, and winning her heart, nearly kept by her. With difficulty, she decided she had to place him, and he was initially adopted by a woman who had a houseful of Golden Retrievers. He stayed at her house less than a day. She simply added him to her pack and expected him to get along. A dog fight ensued, and without bothering to find out who was to blame or what had happened, she labelled him a "maniac," and calling the woman who had rescued him, she informed her that he would be put to sleep in the morning. Pleading for his life, his rescuer once again rescued him, by putting in a call to a friend who dropped everything and drove 6 hours to pick him up. He stayed with this good samaritan for 5 months, until one of her other dogs began to pick on him. It was around that time that I was told his story and that his owner was hoping to find a better situation for him. Within 48 hours, believing I must have lost my mind, I knew he was supposed to come and live with me. Beckett is now a fully integrated member of my mixed pack, my favorite lap-warmer, and constant shadow, a CGC, and a Therapy Dog. Aside from me, his favorite things are running and tossing around his frisbee, and meeting and spending time with children. He's a very special, funny dog, and I've been happier with him than I ever was without him.

Beckett died on June 25, 2002 after an 8 month battle with cutaneous hemangiosarcoma. His memorial page says all that can be said.
